Celebrations ~ May 11, 2006

In this Issue:

Welcome to mid-May! I don't know about you, but I'm just floored at how quickly time is moving. A friend of mine just told me it gets that way once you arrive at 50, and it keeps getting faster every year. Is that true for you as well?

You may be wondering...what happen to our front door - the OlderWiserWomen front page? I'd like to blame the internet gremlins, but this time, I was the one who made a boo-boo and wrote over the front page. The website is working fine...I just need to redo the Welcome page. Time for a face lift anyway!

Speaking of face lift...I was in the process of doing just that with our blogs. The goal was to make them easier to read, to bring about some uniformity in look, so you know you are on a OWW trusted site. Take a peaking at Health Aging for Women to get a preview of what is to come.

Mother's Day is this weekend. While we all know that everyday is certainly a good day to honor our mothers, I'm glad there is at least one day when it becomes the rule if you will. Happy Mother's Day to all Mom's!

As I indicated last issue,, National Women's Health Week is coming up - this next week in fact. This is a great time to visit your primary provider (a Nurse Practitioner perhaps?) and make sure you are up to date on any health screenings you may need and are on track to maintaining your health. I know I've been getting up to date on all my screenings...I'd like to invite you to join me.

Namaste,

Barbara C. Phillips, NP

Readers Comments

Reader Suzanne sent in the following comments:

If my own gut instincts had not been nagging at me I may have let it go concerning the bone scan, however, I did not. After I found out I had osteopenia at -1.6, I realized that this was the results of a lifetime of a situation. There are so many signs and women never receive all of the information. The loose teeth, gum inflammation the first sign that something is wrong. Yet, you are never told. I finally started reading and found that the puzzle has many pieces of missing information that health professionals never really give. They dwell on the initial problem of why you paid them a visit. For me it began with the teeth and gums, and never once was there a question of was there more going on. Even my own health OBGYN did not give me answer, except to deliver the new that I had osteopenia and to take 1500 calcium and 400 Vitamin D.

Without my doing the research I never would have put the puzzle together of the minerals, and vitamins and other things which are available out there.

Exercise and plenty of it, plus a vegetarian life style. I am beginning to realize that there needs to be a more vocal voice out there to scream that women need to pay attention. This is your foundation, the skeleton.

Ed: Suzanne brings up some very valid points. You can take charge of your life & health. If you are doing things that promote bone loss, you need to stop. You can prevent or minimize bone loss with a good diet, lots of exercise and plenty of Calcium/VitaminD. You can read more about this on our Wiserbody pages.

womens heatlh weekNational Women's Health Week
One of the things that women do so very well is take care of everyone around them. Most of us are experts at care giving - doesn't matter if it's our child, our partner, our friends, or our parents....we take care of everyone...except ourselves.

This week, May 14-20, 2006 has been designated as women's health week, and May 15, 2006 is National Women's Check up Day.

Please join me in taking care of YOU. Here are some suggested activities.

  • See your Nurse Practitioner or other health care provider.
  • Have a mammogram, colonoscopy, or other recommended screening test.
  • Take 30 minutes to recharge your batteries and refill your own reserves.
  • Exercise. May is a great time to get out for a walk along a beach or in a park. Smell the roses!
  • If you smoke...stop for the day or the week. Give your lungs and body a break.
  • Spend a few moments learning how to fix a healthy and indulgent meal. Does not have to be fancy or difficult. It only needs to nourish the whole of you.
  • Give yourself credit for all you do! Namaste!

Mother's Day

Mother's Day, graduation, birthdays, Nurse's Day...all these spring time events are coming up. Are you stuck for some gift suggestions? Consider these:

I cannot tell you how exciting it is to finally be able to announce the launch of Balance & Wisdom ~ Internet Radio for Women. This is a project I've been working on for over a year with Joanie Winberg (The Happy Wednesday Lady) and it's finally ready!
