Sally Field on Osteoporosis

Sally Field. I don’t know about you, but I remember Gidget and the Flying Nun. I loved her in Steel Magnolias. And now…I love her as an advocate to bring to light the issue of osteoporosis in women.

Thanks Sally!

How to banish wrinkles naturally!

“Self-assurance beats Botox for smoothing a wrinkled brow. It lasts longer, and you can give it to yourself.”

A quote from the April issue of “O Magazine”.

Older Women’s Commmunity

This is an interesting question I received form a woman in the Netherlands. While this is one woman’s experience, we know that she is not alone.

=======

It is not very clear to me, what the members of OlderWiserWomen community can do for each other. In my country (the Netherlands) I cannot find such communities; generally spoken, women above the age of 50 are seen as old, sick and ready to die. If they are unemployed, there is no way of finding a job. Fortunately I have my one business as a photografer and writer, but even then, there are so many prejudices.

======

Does this sound like your life at all?

If you were to have a “real” vs “virtual” OlderWiserWomen community in your location, what would that look like?

What advice or recommendations would you have for this woman or anyone else who is in her situation?

What could you do in your community to change the perception of older women?

Midlife Changes For Women

The CBS Early Show did a segment on women and midlife. I love the opening sentence of this…”Midlife doesn’t need to bring crisis. Sometimes, it just brings change, in the form of reinvention.”

I often hear the term “midllife” used right along with “crisis”. I for one have not felt like I’m in crisis. Yes, I’m changing and my world is changing. It’s exciting, sometimes a bit scarey (most of us don’t like the “unknown”), yet I would not have it any other way.

What changes are you experiencing? How do you see midlife? Feel free to post your comments below…I’d love to hear form you.

Baby Boomers made history

…as did the generations coming before and after. Here is one persons thoughts…

Oldest baby boomers, turning 60, have seen - and made - history

July 20, 1969, on live television, Neil Armstrong became the first human being to walk on the moon. The baby boomers were there.

Nov. 4, 1963, on live television, in the basement of the Dallas police headquarters, Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. The baby boomers were there.

In the rice paddies and jungles of Vietnam and on the steps of St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington as John-John Kennedy saluted the casket of his father, the baby boomers were there.

This is the year that the oldest baby boomers - born between 1946 and 1964 - turn the big 6-0. That means they’re only two years away from eligibility for Social Security, a milestone that could mean an economic crisis for the nation.

To give some background, the “baby boom” occurred when U.S. soldiers returned from World War II and produced babies in numbers that caused a population spike.

Famous boomers include President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush, former President Bill Clinton, pop singer Cher, actor Sylvester Stallone and iconic boomer singer Jimmy Buffett. All of them remember the astronaut triumphs, events surrounding the JFK assassination, and Vietnam War protests and battlefield bloodshed.

Television broadcasts are intertwined with those memories.

Elder Wisdom Circle

The Elder Wisdom Circle is ” a FREE service providing practical advice and guidance from empathetic volunteer seniors. Please think of us as grandparents to the cyber-world.” They are “comprised of volunteer Seniors aged 60-97. Elders participate individually from their home computers or collectively at a senior community. Our Elders represent a richly diverse patchwork of life experience and wisdom.”

This is a fantastic idea.

Hmmm….what about Older Wiser Women mentoring Younger Wiser Women?

When Will I Die? A Mortality Test

CHICAGO — It sounds like a perfect parlor game for baby boomers suddenly confronting their own mortality: What are your chances of dying within four years?

Researchers have come up with 12 risk factors to try to answer that for people older than age 50.

This is one game where you want a low score. Zero to 5 points says your risk of dying in four years is less than 4 percent. With 14 points, your risk rises to 64 percent.

Just being male gives you 2 points. So does having diabetes, being a smoker and getting pooped trying to walk several blocks.

Points accrue with each four-year increment after age 60.

The test doesn’t ask what you eat, but it does ask if you can push a living room chair across the floor.

You can read the rest of the article here: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/health/259555_death15.html

The full test is available in the Journal of the American Medical Society (JAMA).
