Women, especially older women, seem to frequently be in the news as targets of scammers. This evening there is an alert going out in the Jacksonville, FL area about a man who has been telling women they are victims of identify theft and need to give their money to him for safekeeping. While that one does not sound that convincing to me, there have been others that are a bit more real sounding. So what are some ways to keep yourself safe?

1. Do not give money to anyone you don’t know.

2. Do not give our any personal information over the phone or even in person to someone you don’t know.

3. If someone comes to your door, ask for verification of who they say they are. If necessary, call a reference number to see if he/she is legit.

4. Women can be scammers too!

5. When using any credit cards or debit cards, make sure you are keeping them safe. Do not carry you PIN numbers with the cards.

6. If you get email telling you you’ve won something, that your account at XYZ bank is locked, or you need to reactive your ebay/paypal/online banking…DON’T! Never click on the links in those emails, and if you do…NEVER enter your information into those sites. While some of these emails look official, they almost never are. If you are really concerned call the bank or credit card company.

7. Empty out your wallet and photo copy all it’s contents. All your ID, credit and debit cards, etc. Put this in a safe place. You’ll have the information you need to quickly close accounts if you should ever lose your wallet. Better yet, put your wallet on a diet and keep only the bare essentials on you at any given time.

I’m sure many others have other suggestions as to how you can keep yourself and your bank accounts safe, so if you have more suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below.

Stay safe!

Dave Bunnell rattles off all the reasons why ELDR, his new Marin County-based national magazine aimed at people over 60, should be a hit. He talks about the 13,000 people who turn 60 every day, about the gargantuan spending power of that generation and about how older Baby Boomers don’t describe themselves the same way their parents did when they reached their sixth decade: Old.

“This (magazine) isn’t for people who sit around in their rocking chairs,” said Bunnell, the founder of several successful magazines, including PC World and PC Magazine. He plans to mark his 60th birthday Wednesday with a 60-mile bike ride around Marin. “We are trying to redefine what it means to be 60.” Read the rest…

I’ve known this woman long enough, so I didn’t feel like I had to hide the fact that my jaw dropped!

I just do buy the fact that we are getting “old” to have anything to do with growing older. Getting old is a negative state of mind which translate into an “old body” if you will.

Fortunately, most of us do not want to go in the same direction as this woman was headed (and after our little talk, I’m hopeful that she will re-think her words). No do we have to.

Age with Success was written from the standpoint of what can we do to slow down and perhaps even shave off a few years of aging. Take a peak and see what you think….I’m sure you’ll find a few tips and techniques you can use on your quest for a healthy and positive aging experience.

The author of Aging Deliberately: Safety Circles Good Way to Build Safety Net as We Age  is Liz Taylor. She is talking about making plans in the event that you need them. In other words, you are making plans so you can “control over what happens to us when we’re not” in control. It’s a great idea. It goes beyond having a Living Will and Health Care Power of Attorneys.

Taking her concept even further, we should all be “Aging Deliberately”. Are you letting aging happen to you passively, or are you doing something about how you are aging? Are you planning for your future life? Are you planning for health? Longevity? Happiness?

I hope to addresss these questions and more in a new ebook that should be ready for prime time in the next few weeks. You’ll find it at www.AgeWithSuccess.comÂ

IÂ have an excellent quote on my desk by Tony Robbins that is perfect for this situation - “How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I’m comitted to?”

Something to think about.

Toronto, ON - April 24, 2007 - DefineYourself.ca, an interactive online community launched today and lasting for ten weeks, will boldly explore the world of aging with the help of six Canadian women whose differences lie not only in their approach to growing older, but also in their lifestyles, attitudes and ages, ranging from 40 to 56 years.

In discussions about their personal lives, the group will candidly examine the virtues of aging and their choices for dealing with it, all of which will be shared with the online community as webisodes. The six bi-weekly webisodes will embrace everything from family situations and self-image to cosmetic enhancement and personal finances.

How do women really feel about aging and beauty?
The journey begins with the initial meeting of the women as they weigh in on life, kids and relationships. Subsequent encounters will revolve around personal fears, vulnerabilities and discovering how women have evolved their particular mindsets on aging. Two cosmetic doctors will be introduced to the group and will be available as a resource, should the women choose to consult with them. By the last webisode, if any of the women have chosen to pursue a non-surgical cosmetic treatment, before-and-after images as well as video clips of the women sharing their experiences will be featured on the website. DefineYourself.ca will additionally host interactive features such as polls, blogs and contests, provide regular e-mail updates on upcoming webisodes and site features as well as links to a variety of relevant sites and resources.
“We wanted to create a vehicle for open discussion that doesn’t always take place in real life,” says Alan Chan, associate marketing director of Medicis Aesthetics Canada, the sponsor of the initiative. “We believe people will be both amazed and intrigued by the candor and content of the online discussions and want to participate.”

Managing the impact of time
Since discussions about aging never grow old, DefineYourself.ca will be a magnet for anyone curious about the current zeitgeist as well as those searching for answers to their own dilemmas.

The DefineYourself.ca women include a 40-year-old who works in sales and has two young children, aged five and one-and-a half; a 56-year-old grandmother who is a real estate agent; a stay-at-home mom, 49, who was once an institutional trader and now has three children; a 40-year-old grandmother of two who is a day-care supervisor; a 41-year-old health-care supervisor with four children, and a 55-year-old former hair model, who has had “some work done.” (www.defineyourself.ca/cast.php)

“Women age differently,” says Catharine Fennell of SWINGThink, the online community’s creator. “We’re not all happy about it and many of us want to do something about it. DefineYourself.ca is a place where women can hear from and relate to other women as they share their mindset on aging and explore their possibilities, because that is what women do.”

It’s on all the demo sites. Regardless of where it came from, life is short and these are some refreshing words of wisdom.

Be A Kid Again

1. Do a cartwheel.
2. Sing into your hairbrush.
3. Walk barefoot in wet grass.
4. Play a song you like really loud, over and over.
5. Dot all your “i”’s with smiley faces.
6. Read the funnies. Throw the rest of the paper away.
7. Dunk your cookies.
8. Play a game where you make up the rules as you go along.
9. Step carefully over sidewalk cracks.
10. Change into some play clothes.
11. Try to get someone to trade you a better sandwich.
12. Eat ice cream for breakfast.
13. Kiss a frog, just in case.
14. Blow the wrapper off a straw.
15. Have someone read you a story.
16. Find some pretty stones and save them.
17. Wear your favorite shirt with you favorite pants even if they don’t match.
18. Take a running jump over a big puddle.
19. Get someone to buy you something you really don’t need.
20. Hide your vegetables under your napkin.
21. Stay up past your bedtime.
22. Eat dessert first.
23. Fuss a little, then take a nap.
24. Wear red gym shoes.
25. Put way too much sugar on your cereal.
26. Make cool screeching noises every time you turn a corner.
27. Giggle a lot for no reason.
28. Give yourself a gold star for everything you do today.

Ancient wisdom I just made up. . .
