Seven Reasons To Join A Gym

We all get older… every day. Am I stating the obvious here?

Well, I’m about to go against an entire industry and what the gurus would have you believe.

No matter what they say, there’s no way to “stop aging” or even slow it down!

Nope!

We are biological creatures. And at this time we’re still subject to natural laws, no matter if we like it or not.

However, there are ways to turns the aging process into a more positive and enjoyable experience. Getting older doesn’t have to mean living with pain, suffering, and loss of function.

But here is the clincher… there is a price to pay! [Read more…]

You’re Never Too Old To…

By Johanna

You're never too old

You may want to think twice before  you say “I’m too old for that!”

It’s certainly not what this 82-year-old must have been thinking. She recognized a gap and simply set out to fill it.

She taught herself how to code and today she is one of the world’s oldest iPhone app developers. Masako Wakamiya develops apps for the over-60 market. At 82 she is more than twice the age of the typical Silicon Valley techie.

Up until now, tech companies have paid little attention to the over-60 market. But thanks to Ms. Wakamiya and her app this seems to be changing.

You can read more about Masako Wakamiya and her app “Hinadan” in this article from the South China Morning Post.

Shocking: “The New Normal” For Some Baby Boomers

By Johanna

Age discrimination

Today, I want to share a video with you. The story in it may be true for some of us now, or it may become a reality later on.

It’s the story of Elizabeth White, told by her in her self-published book “Fifty-five, Unemployed, and Faking Normal.”

Hats off to you Elizabeth White! It takes courage and guts to speak up and tell the truth.

Elizabeth White, educated and successful by any measure, lives at the edge of the “financial cliff.” As an older, unemployed woman, she finds it difficult to get hired. She’s gone through her savings and retirement and takes on freelance work to get by.

But she is not alone…

Many middle aged, qualified adults talk about how difficult it is to get hired because of their age. And it seems that it’s worse for women than for men.

Yes, even though unlawful, age discrimination is alive and well! [Read more…]

Let’s Celebrate International Women’s Day 2017!

By Johanna

March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a gender-focused event celebrating the achievements of women around the world. But the day also serves as a reminder that women all over the world still experience inequalities in education, access to opportunities, and pay.

According to numbers published by UN Women, women still only earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men… that is for work of equal value. Sadly, this gap exists across all countries and industries.

“This stubborn inequality in the average wages between men and women persists in all countries and across all sectors because women’s work is under-valued and women tend to be concentrated in different jobs than men. Even though the work itself may require equal or more effort and skills, it’s valued and remunerated less. For women of color, immigrant women and mothers, the gap widens. The so-called “motherhood penalty” pushes women into informal economy, casual and part-time work, and tends to be larger in developing countries than in developed countries.”

And things are slow to change. Current projections tell us that it could be as long as 2069 before we may see equality in pay.

While inequality in pay is a consequence of the many inequalities faced by women every day, it has far-reaching consequences, particularly as women age.  [Read more…]

Food Safety – Do You Need To Be Concerned?

By Johanna

Food SafetyMost of us don’t give that question a second thought. And why should we?

In the US, as in other “first world countries”, our food and the way it moves through the food chain, is monitored and regulated by various government agencies.

But even so, at times there are food safety warnings and even recalls of FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulated foods.

According to the FDA, “Food producers recall their products from the marketplace when the products are mislabeled or when the food may present a health hazard to consumers because the food is contaminated or has caused a foodborne illness outbreak”.

Unfortunately safety warnings and recalls are not as infrequent as we’d like them to be. And people, in the US and all over the world, do get sick from foodborne illnesses.

Knowing and understanding the issues around food safety are even more important as you get older.

Some of the infections caused by contaminated foods tend to affect people with poor or compromised health to a larger degree. Young children, the elderly and people already battling illness, are at much greater risk for serious illness.

Not long ago, the WHO (World Health Organization) published information and facts on food safety. You can read the main points below.

10 Facts On Food Safety
